There are certain spell rotations and certain macros that will help any person become a good shadow priest, and while we could list all day the options you have, you will find what works best for you.

Shadow Priest talents build for leveling

Your three most important talents as a Shadow priest are (1.) Spirit Tap (2.) Shadow form (3.) Vampiric Embrace. Spirit Tap is what makes grinding as a Priest so fast and easy. Shadowform by itself is a bit lacking (since you can't cast Holy spells to heal yourself) but Vampiric Embrace circumvents this difficulty. Vampiric Embrace is another ability that, like mind flay, will seem somewhat negligible until your early 40’s whereupon it really comes into play as a massive time-saver due to the self-healing effect making every fight more efficient. Shadow Weaving, Shadow Power, Vampiric touch – All of these talents now serve to beef up your already deadly arsenal and provide some slight mana regeneration/variety in the form of another DoT.

Your most important stat by far is Spirit. The faster you can regenerate your health and particularly your mana, then the less downtime you have between fights and the faster you level. With Spirit Tap, you'll get even more mileage out of SPR. As far as INT and STM, I would rank INT more important than STM. If you really want to, you can boost your STM with Fort. As a Priest, your mana pool is your lifeline. If you have mana, you can shield yourself to prevent more damage, you can regen/heal yourself to recover life, and you can deal large amounts of damage.

Healing Prayers is another friend of your mana pool, max this talent to gain 20% reduction of two different spells.

The next three talents are crucial for a Holy Priest and you need to max them all. Empowered Renew will make your Renew heal the target instantly; Circle of Healing allowing you to heal up to five friendly party or raid members within range; Test of Faith increase healing rate on a party members whose health below 50%, increase the probability to save him/her.

As a Holy Priest, you will want to spend the last 20 points on the Discipline Tree to increase your survivability. Keeping yourself alive comes first before maintain the others health and a group will be in a very disadvantage when their healer dies.

Gear for healing is fairly easy to get and your main concerns should be +Healing, Intellegence, +Mana per 5 sec (+mp5) and Spirit. Luckily all of these come in at least pairs on most healing items you will find.
